Aniline is an organic compound with the formula C6H5NH2, consisting of a phenyl group and an amino group. It is an industrially important commercial chemical and a common starting material for fine chemical synthesis. Its main use is to make precursors for polyurethanes, dyes and other industrial chemicals. It ignites easily and burns with the smoky flame characteristic of aromatic compounds. Similarly, it is also prone to oxidation: although freshly purified aniline is an almost colorless oil, exposure to air will cause the sample to gradually darken (turn yellow or red) due to the formation of a strong color, oxidizing impurities. Aniline is a weak base and nucleophilic reagent, which can be diazotized to obtain diazo salts, and then undergo various nucleophilic substitution reactions.
